In any organisation, written communication plays a major role. Whether the communication is for internal or to external sources, for example customers, it is essential that the document is written and presented in an easy to understand way.
Written communication can be influenced by business culture. Examples include the legal and accountancy professions where it is normal for written documents to have long, chunky and complex paragraphs. In marketing and advertising, for example, the opposite will be seen, that it, highly visual, lots of colour and 'punchy' short language.
The purpose of any report or proposal should be to enable the reader to gain new information. This may be to understand something they know of or to provide them with information to persuade them to take a recommended course of action.
