Filing Frenzy is the latest exercise developed and tested for Trainers’ Library by Glasstap.

In this exercise participants work individually or in teams to sort a pack of specially designed ‘cards’ into categories following selected instructions carefully.

Originally designed to test and develop attention to detail and accuracy, the exercise can also be used as an energiser to develop teamwork, goal setting and process improvement.

The exercise can also be used to show reactions to change and is a particularly effective tool for demonstrating the transition curve and in particular the effect change has on short term performance.

Filing Frenzy is normally run as a series of intermittent energisers, with each ‘round’ taking about 10 minutes to run.

As this was a large group we provided enough cards for the audience to pair up. I set a time limit for the first exercise and then asked the audience how long they wanted for the second session, and then the third. This resulted in lots of discussion about instructions, how people interpret things differently, how everybody reacts to the task differently, some people refusing to try and giving up, others desperate to get finished in time, others taking their time to get it right. I used this at the beginning of the two day event and it worked well as an energiser/ice breaker as well as communication exercise.
