This entertaining video shows a typical regular meeting involving departmental heads and comprises of five short scenes; each designed to highlight particular learning points.

These are followed by a ‘review’ scene that should help participants to recognise the learning points from the first scenes and summarises these (albeit in a slightly unconventional way).

The scenes’ themes are:

Starting the meeting.
Managing discourse.
The stuff that serves no purpose.
Diversions.
The amount of time spent on a topic in inverse proportion to its importance.

The final review lets us hear direct feedback from the attendees and hear what they thought about the value of the meeting and the chairing!

The video is designed to provide an entertaining but powerful learning tool that provokes discussion and raises awareness of some of the behaviours in meetings that can cause problems.

I’ve used the ineffective meeting DVD in a piece of training this week. It’s an excellent DVD which certainly brings to the table the identification of ineffective behaviours in meetings. People do know what these are, however, I could actually see lightbulbs going on inside heads when they saw the visual on screen. The effective meeting clips are also useful to sum up and show the specific behaviours that contribute to effective meetings. Overall using the DVD as a training tool was really effective. I liked using the DVD to get individuals to recognise their own behaviours, to show examples of bad practice and good practice and to get people thinking about changing how they behave. Also it’s such an easy way to provide this information in a format that gets the to the point immediately versus a number of PowerPoint slides or a workbook which doesn’t have such an impact.

I have been delivering Chairing Meetings training for some time now, trying to draw out the importance of starting meetings on time, having set timed agendas , preparation etc. As one of your gold members I was able to stream the video in my recent training session and it allowed me to facilitate discussion after each scene. All the delegates were able to identify Colin's failings as a chair. They all went away with a clear action plan of how to avoid poor meetings in future.Using the video really stimulated discussion and ideas. a really useful tool.
